How Does Microneedling Work?

Using the Health Canada-approved Pro-Cell Therapies MD Micro Channeling system, we temporarily stamp hundreds of thousands of micro-punctures into the skin that will be repaired by the production of new, healthy collagen. The application of a serum containing naturally-derived growth factors and peptides during microneedling treatment amplifies the healing process and restores biological communication, supplementing what the aging immune system no longer provides.

As your skin heals, it will revitalize itself with firm, collagen-rich tissue that is more even in tone, texture, and elasticity. Your skin can even continue producing more collagen for months after your appointment!

Microneedling treatment (also known as collagen induction therapy) can affect:

  • Scars, including acne scars and stretch marks.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Enlarged pores.
  • Hyperpigmentation, or dark spots.
  • Hair growth

Included with Microneedling: double cleanse, AHA pre-treatment solution, facial numbing and a cool hyaluronic mask

Questions Our Customers Ask About Microneedling Treatments:

  • What skin conditions can microneedling treat?

Microneedling treatments are most commonly used on the face and can affect the appearance of:

    • Scars, including acne scars and stretch marks.
    • Fine lines and wrinkles.
    • Enlarged pores.
    • Hyperpigmentation, or dark spots.

Some studies also show microneedling may help treat hair loss (alopecia), although more trials are needed to say for sure.

Microneedling might not be the right treatment for you if you have:

    • Certain skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis.
    • Open wounds.
    • Active acne.
    • Recently undergone radiation therapy.

Microneedling has similar effects as laser therapy at a significantly lower cost. Laser therapy may be more effective for some people, but due to safety concerns related to the functionality of laser treatments, people with dark skin tones may find microneedling more convenient.

  • Does microneedling hurt?

We apply facial numbing for your comfort during the microneedling procedure, so you should not experience pain. You may feel pressure or a scratchy feeling as the needles are applied, and the bony areas of your face could feel a little uncomfortable. If you feel more than slightly uncomfortable during the procedure, let your aesthetician know immediately.

Your skin will be more sensitive after the treatment, so it would be best to avoid applying makeup or heavy chemicals and limit your time in the sun until your skin has healed. On average, most people’s skin will heal after a week.

While microneedling is minimally invasive, there are minor risks involved, much like any other skin care treatment. After the procedure, you could experience some skin irritation and redness. Both irritation and redness are normal responses and should last no more than a few days following your appointment. Recovery time from microneedling is very minimal and should not hold you back from your regular activities. If you experience more severe side effects like bleeding, bruising, or infection, contact your doctor right away.

  • How long does a microneedling session take?

A session of microneedling on your face will last about one hour. After applying the numbing cream, we will leave that to sit and take effect for approximately 30 - 40 minutes. The microneedling itself will take about 20 minutes..

Microneedling is most commonly used as a facial treatment, but you can apply it to any part of the body. Each session’s timing depends on the amount of skin that you are treating, so for example, a hand would only take 10-15 minutes. It would take longer to treat larger areas for conditions like stretch marks or other scars.

  • Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?

You can combine microneedling with some other skin care products and procedures to improve the results of both treatments!

At The Face Space, your microneedling also includes a serum containing naturally-derived growth factors and peptides, a double cleanse, AHA pre-treatment solution, and a cool hyaluronic mask to amplify your body’s healing process.

Microneedling can help treat certain skin conditions and is more effective than many at-home treatments (e.g. derma rollers).  If no other solutions have worked as desired for your skin, consult our experts or your dermatologist to see if microneedling might be a better alternative to more intensive cosmetic procedures.

  • Are the results of microneedling permanent?

While microneedling is noticeably effective and may boost your collagen production for three to six months after treatment, you should consider touch-up treatments to keep long-term effects. We typically recommend between 4 and 6 sessions initially to see the best results, and then you can reduce the frequency of your appointments to maintain your complexion.

Facials treatment results will vary from person to person and depend on the severity and location of your skin concerns. You should be able to see results after your first treatment has healed, but much like many other skin care treatments, your body can adapt and improve when given consistent tender loving care.
